Grooming Brushes

**A. Brushes**

Brushes are great for getting rid of loose fur, dirt, and knots, and can help keep your pet's skin in good shape. What kind you grab depends on what kind of fur your pet has and what you need to do.

*   **Slicker Brush:**

    *   *What it is:* Thin, short, close-together wires on a flat or kinda curved base.
    *   *What it does:* Gets rid of loose fur, mats, and knots. Works best on medium and long fur.
    *   *Good for:* Dogs and cats with curly, long, or thick fur.
*   **Bristle Brush:**

    *   *What it is:* Soft or medium bristles, made from natural stuff or fake stuff.
    *   *What it does:* Smooths fur, spreads oils, and makes it shiny.
    *   *Good for:* Pets with short hair, or for a final touch on pets with long hair.
*   **Pin Brush:**

    *   *What it is:* Long pins with round tips on a soft base.
    *   *What it does:* Untangles fur and feels good on the skin without pulling.
    *   *Good for:* Medium and long fur, especially for dogs with fluffy fur.
*   **Undercoat Rake (or Deshedding Brush):**

    *   *What it is:* Metal teeth that reach under the top fur to grab loose undercoat fur.
    *   *What it does:* Cuts down on shedding and stops mats from forming.
    *   *Good for:* Breeds with double coats.
*   **Rubber Brush (or Curry Comb):**

    *   *What it is:* Soft rubbery bumps or bristles.
    *   *What it does:* Feels good on the skin, gets rid of loose fur, and gets the natural oils going.
    *   *Good for:* Short-haired dogs and cats, and pets with sensitive skin.
*   **Pin & Bristle Combo Brush:**

    *   *What it is:* Pins on one side, bristles on the other.
    *   *What it does:* Untangles and smooths all at once.
    *   *Good for:* Pets with different kinds of fur in different spots.

**B. Gloves**

Gloves are a cool and easy option instead of brushes. They’re like a gentle massage that also removes fur.

*   **Silicone/Rubber Nubs Gloves:**

    *   *What it is:* Gloves with soft rubber or silicone bumps.
    *   *What it does:* Gets rid of loose fur and dirt while giving a massage.
    *   *Good for:* Pets with short fur, sensitive pets, or pets that get scared easily.
*   **Combination Gloves:**

    *   *What it is:* Some gloves have different textures to grab more fur.
    *   *What it does:* Can get out more of that stubborn undercoat fur while being gentle.
    *   *Good for:* Pets with medium or long fur.

**2. How to Groom**

*   Brush the same way the fur grows.
*   Be gentle and don't pull on knots.
*   Start at the head and neck, then go towards the tail.
*   If the fur is long, hold it in sections so you don't pull on the skin.
*   Just put the glove on and pet your pet gently.
*   Great for pets that are nervous since it feels like a massage.
*   You can even use it when bathing to scrub in the shampoo.
*   Use undercoat rakes or deshedding brushes once a week if your pet sheds a lot.
*   Always be gentle so you don't hurt their skin.
*   Brush before a bath to get loose fur out.
*   Brushing after a bath can help stop knots and make the fur look shinier.

**3. Why Brush and Glove?**

*   Less fur all over your house.
*   Helps cats avoid hairballs by removing fur before they swallow it.
*   Keeps skin healthy
*   Gets the blood flowing and makes oils.
*   Can help with dry skin, skin problems, or dandruff.
*   Bonding Time
*   Brushing or using gloves helps you and your pet become closer.
*   A lot of pets like how it feels—like a massage.
*   No More Mats or Knots
*   Regular brushing stops those painful mats that hold in yuckiness.
*   Spot Problems Early
*   Grooming helps you see skin problems, bumps, bugs, or cuts early on.

**4. Picking the Right Stuff**

*   Short-haired pets: Rubber gloves or soft bristle brushes.
*   Medium-haired pets: Pin brushes or combo brushes.
*   Long or curly fur: Slicker brushes and undercoat rakes.
*   Double-coated breeds: Deshedding tools or undercoat rakes.
*   Sensitive skin: Soft rubber gloves or gentle bristle brushes.
*   *Tip:* If you have different pets, it's good to have a few brush/glove types for different fur.

**5. Keeping Your Gear Clean**

*   After you brush, get the fur off the brush.
*   Use a comb or your fingers to pull it off.
*   For gloves, just peel the fur off the bumps.
*   Wash your tools often
*   Brushes: Use warm water and gentle soap, then let them air dry.
*   Gloves: Rinse them when you're done.
*   Keep an eye on wear and tear
*   Get new brushes if the pins bend or the bristles break.
*   Gloves that are torn or have worn-down bumps can hurt the skin.

**6. Extra Pointers**

*   Groom your pets often! How often depends on their fur.
*   Be careful around sensitive spots (face, belly, tail).
*   Make grooming a nice time! Treats can help.
*   Start when they’re young so they get used to it.
